Krone, Sutherland Match Race at Del Mar?

Retired Hall of Fame jockey and Carlsbad resident Julie Krone will work horses in the morning for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella again this year, although outside obligations may keep her from doing so as much as she did last year.

High on Krone’s “to do” list is defending her title in the St. Leger Legends charity race at Doncaster in England on September 12.

Never at a loss for ideas or energy, Krone has been “needling” Del Mar officials about staging a match race involving herself and Chantal Sutherland – working title “The Girls of Summer.”

Krone and Sutherland are both 0-1 in match races at Del Mar. Krone lost a close one to Patrick Valenzuela in the 2003 “Battle of the Sexes,” Sutherland a not-so-close one to Mike Smith in last year’s “Battle of the Exes.”
