Derby Favorite Union Rags Wins For Fun

Union Rags Fountain of Youth

Union Rags, making his first start as a 3-year-old, showed no signs of rust at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, posting an emphatic four-length tally in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes.

The field was reduced to seven after the defection of morning line favorite Algorithms and the betting public settled on Discreet Dancer as the post time choice. The Pletcher trainee set a comfortable tempo for a half with News Pending making an early move under Kent Desormeaux.

Julien Leparoux was sitting chilly stalking the pace on the ouside aboard Union Rags, and he moved effortlessly to the lead turning for home. He cruised home under a hand ride and lived up to his top billing as winterbook favorite for Kentucky Derby 2012.

News Pending put away Discreet Dancer in a solid place finish. It was a top three parade throughout with the rest never seriously threatening.

Neck 'N Neck finished 4th and was followed across the line by Fort Loudon, Csaba, and Casual Trick.

Union Rags, a strapping son of Dixie Union trained by Michael Matz, stopped the clock in 1:42.68 and paid $4.40. He is expected to make his next start in the G1 Florida Derby on March 31.

Cocoa2, in a perfect world, I'd agree with you. If he really did go on and pull off that heist, he'd be worth way too much(insurance wise to race after 3. And honestly, what more would there be to prove if one could do all that as a 3 yr old, nowadays? UnionRags had 3yr old form at 2, looks and talent. I'd rather see his offspring down the road, than see him crippled and put down at 4 or 5. Its all hypothetical per say - as Julio Escalante Canai would say, "Who Cares?!?!"

Cardly Knot - I hope he runs as a 4, maybe a five before they retire him. He looks like he has skill.
I don't feel like he was tested very much in the FOY.. He ran beautifully, don't get me wrong but with Algo out of the picture his next rival was DD and we all knew he wasn't going to enjoy the distance. Looking forward to both, El Padrino and Union Rags next start! :)
HE'S OFF TO A GREAT START, WITH A HEART LIKE HIS,ONE OF THOSE THAT GO DOWN IN HISTORY.
Union Rags is the clear favorite for the Derby now. Lets hope he makes it to the race, the last few years has not been too good for favorites even getting to start in the Derby.
He raced "green" more than once, which made it something he needed to figure out. Sure looks like he did so in the FOY, looked very professional, changed leads smoothly and powered away, straight as an arrow.
One wavering race is not a habit one has to overcome
The best lesson learned from this race was that Union Rags has learned to run straight down the stretch. He was my derby favorite after winning the Champagne, and I'm glad I never left the UR bandwagon after the BC Juvy.
