, a winner of multiple graded stakes races including the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Invitational, is set to compete in the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher for fillies and mares on Sunday. Conditioned by Larry Jones, Joyful Victory will try Monmouth for the first time as she travels a mile and a sixteenth over the main track.
“She made the trip over on Thursday,” said Jones of Joyful Victory, who was previously stabled at Churchill Downs. “She shipped well and she’s looking good.”
Two races back, Joyful Victory went gate-to-wire besting the field by an impressive four lengths in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Invitational on March 16 at Santa Anita. After a break of over two months she returned to racing at Belmont where she placed fifth in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap on May 27. She will make her start here on Sunday after another two month layoff, but Jones explained that there is a method to his madness.
“It’s a layoff by design,” said Jones. “She’s had a long year so we want to keep her as fresh as possible for the Breeders’ Cup. We’ve been pointing at the Molly Pitcher for quite a while.”
A 5-year-old daughter of Tapit, Joyful Victory carries the colors of Fox Hill Farms, and has earned $1,102,679 in 18 lifetime starts for her owners. Jones hopes that she can add to that number by capturing the winner’s share of the Pitcher’s $200,000 purse by using the same winning formula as she has in the past.
“She’s done well going to the front,” Jones said. “Hopefully she doesn’t get pushed too hard in this race but we’re on the far outside so we have a great position. She’s fresh from her break, so we’re not going to throw an anchor on her. We’re going to let her run.”
Jockey Rosie Napravnik has the mount on Joyful Victory in the Molly Pitcher, which will go as race 6 on the 14-race Haskell card Sunday.
