I give Cella and Oaklawn credit for setting this up the right way. Paying the $100k down 10 spots does everything you can to ensure a good field. Medlocke, I agree. I think Zenyatta's camp is like... put em in the gate with a decent field and let's go. Rachel's camp has, is and will be a lot more choosy about their spots. Oaklawn's a pretty decent speed track that she's won over, or I think they would be balking a bit more. There's no way they want to face Z at 9 furlongs at Churchill or Belmont.
With $5 million, I'd toss my $5k claimer in... who knows how large the field will end-up being.
Like I'm certain all true fan's of thoroughbred racing are, I'm extremely excited about the looming match up between Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra in the April 9th Apple Blossom Handicap. But I understand that Oaklawn's President is trying to draw a 10 filly and mare field. Who are some of the other potential invitees to this race? How about Informed Decision? Ladies Classic champion Life is Sweet? Sarah Louise, the last filly to beat Rachel? Even Stardom Bound and Justwhistledixie would make the field more interesting. But as excited as I am about this potential event, and I use the word potential loosely, as I'll believe it's going to happen when I see them both in the starting gate together. I do however feel that the Jess Jackson camp seem's to have "puffed up" a bit about potential races between the two star fillies. Why, in the good lord's name, would Jess Jackson go to the table with NTRA President Alex Waldrop and propose a three race series between the two and not include the Moss's or John Shirreffs in any of the potential negotiations? That really seem's quite strange to me. As if one were, and pardon the pun, were jockeying for an advantage or for all conditions to fall in one's favor. JMO.
I sure hope and believe as Medlocke stated that the picture says it all and she'll do it with her ears pricked! Go Queen Z! I just hope both horses stay healthy they are both great and this will indeed be a race for the ages.
Finally!!!! Im so excited for this Race!!
I think the picture on the cover story give's a pretty accurate assessment of how the race will come out. It's almost like a photo of the finish, IMO. I can see Zenyatta catching Rachel in the stretch and crossing the line ahead of her by about a head. JMO.
First of all, major prop's to Charles Cella, Oaklawns President, for finally putting up enough money and making a situation come out agreeable to both parties. Since we know that there's no way that Jackson would race Rachel against Zenyatta on synthetics, the fairest situation now exist. Both have raced and won at Oaklawn. Both have raced and won at 1-1/8th, and all will be carrying equal weight, 123 pounds. No advantage or disadvantage to either. It's show time. As Michael Buffer say's, " let's get ready to rumble."
it's like a male soap-opera!! haha love it!!
Nice to see that Jackson finally grew some balls. I was starting to think he had taken up "dodge ball" instead of horse racing. I'm still cautious though. I tend to agree with mid0827's comment about it being 5-1 that they end up in the gate together. Rachel has been vulnerable in races that have deep closers. Although she managed to hold off MTB in the Preakness and Macho Again in the Woodward, Zenyatta isn't MTB or MA. She's the best deep closer in racing, male or female, bar none. IMO, that early in the season, Zenyatta will be just too much mare for Rachel to hold off blowing by her.
I still put it at 5-1 that these two end up in the gate together at Oaklawn.
Agree. Great that Charlie called his bluff. Tough to back out of it then.
Already requested off from work for April 9th. Jess Jackson handled this situation almost like Don King did with Tyson last decade.
That's what it looks like. Cella called his bluff and moved the race ahead one week...no excuses now for Jackson. We'll just have to wait for his next press releases.
its about time. jess jackson had no excuses this time.
