It's Me Mom Rockets Away in Sunshine Millions

Trainer Lynne Scace knew what she was doing when she shipped in It’s Me Mom for the six furlong Florida Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint.  The Put It Back filly indeed put them back when she wired the field of seven, increasing her six furlong record to six wins from nine starts.

Owned and bred by Jean and Thomas Bosch, It’s Me Mom took command right from the gate with no challengers in sight. The four year old filly broke from the rail but raced slightly off the lead. She set extremely fast fractions going the first quarter in 22:25, the half in :44.41, and completing the six furlongs in 1:08.85.  She increased her distance from the field with every quarter and went on to win by six and three quarter lengths over Honey Chile and Indulgence.
“We knew we’d be in front, that’s what she does,” commented her rider, Willie Martinez.  “There’s a difference between fast and brilliant speed and she has brilliant speed.  To go in :22 today, that’s an accomplishment from how she was earlier in her career.  She’s just a freak.”
In her two year old season,  It’s Me Mom, showed speed in all of her five starts, over synthetic at Presque Isle Downs, and her record was 3-1-1.
“She took to the synthetic track early in her career and then I took her to Tampa and she finished second (in the Sandpiper Stakes) , but I don’t really think she liked it (dirt) that much,” Scace said.  “Then we brought her here and she finished fourth (Old Hat Stakes) early last year.  I think the biggest difference between then and now is that she just grew up and matured.  She also likes her races spaced out.  We’ll take  her back to Tampa now.  I haven’t really thought much about what might be next.”
Trainer Amy Tarrant sent out Pomeroys Pistol as the favorite in the Filly and Mare Sprint.  The bay filly raced off the pace but had no kick finishing fifth by a half length.
“It wasn’t  her day,” said Tarrant.  “I did have reservations about running her in this race.  I think I did her a disservice.  It was an extremely fast pace, probably the fastest race she’s ever been in.  She just stayed the same pace. So, she wasn’t at top form today and I take full responsibility for that.  She’s still a nice filly and we will look at the seven eighths race (Inside Information) in March (17th).”
The Eclipse Award Winning filly Musical Romance, trained by Bill Kaplan, finished fourth by four and three quarters of a length after a slow start.
“Juan (Leyva, Jockey) said she popped up leaving the gate. She broke a little bad so he (Leyva) did the right thing once that happened,” said Kaplan.  “It’s the first time something like this happened in her last nine starts.  You don’t want to go chasing this early in the year when you give up five, six lengths like that.”
After the race, trainer Kaplan noticed she did not pull up the way he would have liked.
“She grabbed a quarter, left front, when the gate opened and her shoe was half off,” commented Kaplan.  “She looks OK.  I don’t think she’ll lose any training time.  Considering what happened, we’re very proud of her performance.”
