Interesting Del Mar Stats

Del Mar Winning Running Style Stats

First three days of the Del Mar meet are in the vault.  Some interesting stats on how the track is playing thus far, though number of observations are limited.  Of the 12 races run at the sprint distances, 7 were won by off-the-pace/closer types.  The 5 sprint races that were won wire-to-wire were done so by maiden claimers.  Route races on the Polytrack were all won by off-the-pace types.  Turf routes are being won by off-the-pace and closer types but speed is hanging on well for 2nd or 3rd.  With more cool weather expected in the days ahead, don't expect the Polytrack surface to tighten up anytime soon.

Value Plays For Saturday

Race 3

#3 Tiz a Bud Girl -- Sadler charge making a second start off the layoff.  Been working up a storm.  Need 6-1 or better.

Race 5

#9 Unusual Soul -- Look for a big move forward today.  Will revert back to closer running style.  Last work was big.  Look for 10-1 or better.

Race 6

#5 Spring Style -- Loaded for bear.  Cecil has this one tuned up for a huge effort.  Ignore at your own peril.  Need 15-1 or better.

Race 7

#8 Purgestein -- Everyone will be on the Baffert first timers in this one (and deservedly so as the highly touted Rock So Hard makes his debut).  Jeff Blonde's charge is getting a lot of buzz on the backstretch.  Work was fabulous on a dead Del Mar surface.  Going to get great value and take anything over 8-1

Race 8

#1 Crowded House -- Shipper from England been running against top flight horses there.  Runs back to preferred distance and trainer Brian Meehan flys in to saddle this one before turning over his charge to Ben Cecil.  Dangerous and will take 6-1 or better.

Race 9

#12 Back Nine Doc -- Doug O'Neill horses are firing after his entire barn got a two week break at Hollywood.  This one returns to the preferred sprint distance.  Will be heard from today.  Going to need 7-1 or better, however.

#10 Tammy's Luck -- Will appreciate the Del Mar surface.  Many may have given up on her as she slides down the class ladder.  Last work says she deserves one more shot.  Need 6-1 or better.

Race 10

#1 Eze Does It -- Blinkers are back on and a good switch to Victor Espinoza.  Late pace figure in his last is best of this bunch after running a moderate early pace.  Take 6-1 or better.

Del Mar Polytrack Undergoing Major Work

Tedesco and his track maintennace crew will be going through a major rework of the Del Mar Polytrack surface this weekend and especially on Monday when it will receive a deep roto tilling to remix the sand and fibers that are seperating and creating an uneven surface.  Trainers are mixed regarding the impact of the surface on their horses and several left their charges to routine gallops on Friday, including John Sadler.
