Gary Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’
In Lingerie took
command at midstretch and pulled away to a two-length victory over
Mystical Star to win the 57th running of the $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) before a crowd of 12,646 on a brisk afternoon at Keeneland.
The victory earned a spot for In Lingerie in the $2 million Breeders’
Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) to be run November 2 at Santa Anita.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, who also won the Spinster in 2007 with
Panty Raid, and ridden by John Velazquez, In Lingerie covered the 1 1/8
miles on the main track in 1:49.42.
The victory, the third in as many starts on Polytrack for In
Lingerie, a Keeneland sale graduate, was worth $300,000 and increased
her earnings to $712,265 with a record of 7-4-2-1. In Lingerie is a
Kentucky-bred daughter of Empire Maker out of the Storm Cat mare Cat
Chat.
Juanita grabbed the lead going into the first turn with Starformer
and Karlovy Vary applying token pressure as Velazquez settled In
Lingerie into a stalking position on the inside.
The leading trio remained unchanged to the top of the stretch, where
Mystical Star under Jose Lezcano got first run at the leaders from the
outside while Velazquez waited for room. In Lingerie split horses
approaching the eighth pole and easily surged past Mystical Star en
route to victory.
In Lingerie returned $6.80, $3.80 and $3.20. Mystical Star returned
mutuels of $5.60 and $4.60 in finishing 2¼ lengths in front of
Upperline, who rallied for third under James Graham and paid $5.20 to
show.
It was three-quarters of a length back to Starformer, who finished
fourth and was followed in order by Tiz Miz Sue, defending champion
Aruna, Kitty in a Tizzy, Karlovy Vary, Juanita and Disposablepleasure.
