Ice Box 3-1 favorite in Belmont Stakes

Ice Box, the unlucky second-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, drew post 6 and was installed as the 3-1 favorite of 12 runners for the June 5 Belmont Stakes.

Trained by Nick Zito for owner Robert LaPenta, Ice Box is one of three Derby starters entered in the Belmont, along with Make Music For Me and Stately Victor. Neither Derby winner Super Saver nor Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Lookin At Lucky was entered in the Belmont, which does include Preakness runner-up First Dude.

displaced palate for the Ice Box
Yup - I was wrong about Ice Box. He ran a clunker. But none of the horses, including First Dude ran a "solid" race. Slowest Belmont in 15 years and despite a harness-racer pace, First Dude faded in the stretch and ran the last quarter in 26.8. There were no "champions" on the track at Belmont on Saturday.
First Dude runs a solid third to beat Ice Box, Stately Victor and Interactif. Not bad.
Very consisten runner is this one.....Deserves favoritism
Not the entire field. Ice Box is a step or two above these. Fly Down might also be a very good one; too early yet to tell. And among the remaining "Grade 3'ers", there are several better than First Dude (Interactif for one, probably Stately Victor for another).
But the entire field is grade 3 caliber?
I'm not knocking his Preakness race; I'm knocking his "body of work" (still eligible for non-winner of 1) and the fact that he's never shown that he can handle the 1 1/2 mile distance. In my opinion, his Preakness race was a career-best and he'll probably never equal it. After he runs up the track in the Belmont, you'll see him finish his career in Allowance and low-level Grade 3 company.
If First Dude can't last the 1 1/4, he's done at the quarter pole, since the race is 12 furlongs. I'm not sure how anyone can knock his Preakness... he's the speed in the race on Saturday, and the one to catch.
Anyone looking for a "body of work" horse should look no further than Interactif. Two graded wins and several more placings, freshened and working well. I like his chances way better than the Dude's.
humphrey - it's the MLO that has "last line itis". Ice Box has by far the best body of work in the field and deserves to be clearly the odds on favourite. First Dude has never won a graded stakes race despite three tries. Fly Down is more than a last-race wonder. He's won 60% of this races. First Dude is still eligible for n1x and won't last the mile and a quarter.... he won't even be on the board.
OK, good that I am not alone in that thinking. I agree that Ice Box could get really low. 6-5 is not out of the question. Most people have that huge Derby move and all kinds of trouble in their mind. Rightfully so. When you think of that move, then who else can beat him? Really only Fly Down and First Dude. The rest are also-rans and will be bet like that.
I agree. ML is way off base. Ice Box will be close to even money and Fly Down will be a clear second favourite at about 3-1. His recent big win over this track was a much better indicator than First Dude's Preakness effort. First Dude and Make Music for Me will both be about 8-1. Everything else will be double figures.
I am sure that the typical "last line itis" will overtake logic as it always does. A body of work trumps a single move...

I don't like this morning line at all. I think they will absolutely hammer Ice Box here, down to 8-5 or maybe even 7-5. Fly Down, off his impressive win over the track, has to be lower than 9-2. I would put him at 3-1 ahead of First Dude at 7-2. They have the 4th betting choices at 10-1, but I think Make Music for Me gets bet off his big Derby close and is fourth choice at 8-1 and I don't see Uptowncharlybrown getting bet much at all.
