Hungry Island Seeks Repeat in Churchill Distaff Turf Mile

Hungry Island
Emory Hamilton’s Hungry Island will try to become only the second repeat winner of the $250,000-added Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (GII) when she faces nine rivals in the 28th running of the race.

Trained by Shug McGaughey, Hungry Island would join Foresta (1990-91) as the only horse to win the race in consecutive years. An allowance winner at Keeneland on April 7 in her 2013 debut, Hungry Island will break from post position five and be ridden by Javier Castellano.

Chief among her rivals is Glen Hill Farm’s Marketing Mix, who will be making her first start since finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (GI) at Santa Anita in November.

Winner of the Mrs. Revere (GII) here in 2011 and three graded stakes since, Marketing Mix is trained by Tom Proctor and will be ridden by Garrett Gomez. Marketing Mix drew post position eight.

Also in the field are the 1-2 finishers from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (GII) here in 2011: Stephanie’s Kitten and Stopshoppingmaria.

Owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Wayne Catalano, Stephanie’s Kitten won the Edgewood here last May and added the Lake Placid (GII) at Saratoga to her resume in August. Julien Leparoux has the call on Stephanie’s Kitten, who will break from post six in her 2013 debut.

Repole Stable’s Stopshoppingmaria, trained by Todd Pletcher, has won two of three starts in 2013, including the Ladies Turf Sprint at Gulfstream Park in February. Stopshoppingmaria drew post position 10 and will be ridden by John Velazquez.

Adding to the depth of the field is James Miller’s Daisy Devine. Trained by Andrew McKeever, Daisy Devine won the 2012 Jenny Wiley (GI) at Keeneland and was second in this year’s renewal.  James Graham has the call on Daisy Devine, who will break from post position three.

The field for the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile that will go as the eighth race with a 2:59 p.m. post time, from the hedge out, is as follows: Drama Drama (Francisco Torres, 118 pounds), Channel Lady (Rafael Bejarano, 118), Daisy Devine (Graham, 120), Frontside (Leandro Goncalves, 118), Hungry Island (Castellano, 118), Stephanie’s Kitten (Leparoux, 118), Karlovy Vary (Corey Lanerie, 118), Marketing Mix (Gomez, 123), Class Included (Robby Albarado, 118) and Stopshoppingmaria (Velazquez, 118).
