Hollendorfer Takes Shot With Via Villaggio

Via Villaggio, most recently second to Alabama morning-line favorite Grace Hall in the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks, arrived at the Spa around 8 p.m. on Wednesday for her engagement in Saturday’s Grade 1 race after a smooth trip from LA/ Ontario International Airport via Louisville , Ky.

“It was a great trip,” said Christina Jelm, assistant to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. “She settled in, ate all her dinner. I’ve never seen her so happy as today. Ears up, big eyes, she’s happy. She pranced the whole way back to the barn after jogging this morning.”

Via Villaggio, who prior to the Delaware Oaks finished third in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks and won the Grade 3 Railbird at Befair Hollywood Park , will be making her first start past 1 1/16 miles in the Alabama .

“I think she’ll appreciate the extra distance,” said Jelm of the Bernardini filly, who broke her maiden going a mile at Golden Gate Fields on New Year’s Eve. “We were running down Grace Hall in the last one.”

Jelm said the Hollendorfer-trained Nonios, runner-up in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, likely would arrive Tuesday for his engagement in next Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Travers. Nonios, a Pleasantly Perfect colt out of the Touch Gold mare Stylish Manner, is 3-2-1 from six starts, all in 2012.

“He’ll breeze one more time out at Del Mar,” she said.
