Hernandez Makes Inroads at Del Mar

For a jockey, the transition from the Northern California to Southern California circuit is seldom easy.

But it has been done successfully before by the likes of Victor Espinoza, Martin Garcia and Joel Rosario.

Juan Hernandez, 20, is determined to follow the trail and, in his first season at Del Mar, the conclusion has to be “so far, so good.”

The native of Mexico, who has been riding for four years, has seven wins, eight second-place finishes and five thirds from 67 mounts during the meeting. The payoffs for his winners have ranged from $11.40 to $40.40 and averaged $19.80.

“You bring the long shots in, then come the favorites,” Hernandez said through his agent, Ramon Silva.

“I think that he’s good enough to be here,” Silva continues, “and we thought we’d try it and see what happens.”

Equibase shows Hernandez with 365 wins in his career, most of them on the Northern California circuit. He has been top-100 in North America by wins the past two years. His 2012 record: 481 mounts, 92 wins, 70 seconds and 71 thirds.

The son of a jockey has multiple graded stakes victories and was second in the prestigious Classico Caribe in Puerto Rico. He ventured to Southern California after finishing fourth in the jockey standings at the winter-spring meeting at Golden Gate Fields and won five races with four seconds and four thirds from 26 mounts at Hollywood Park.

“I think he’s a very good rider,” said trainer Barry Abrams, who gave Hernandez a leg up on his first Del Mar winner, Roses For Joni ($14.80) in the third race on Thursday, July 19, the second day of the meet.

“He doesn’t get many good horses to ride, but he does well with the ones he gets. He’s young and he’s got the world in front of him. I like him very much.”
