Here Come The Halves

This weekend was booked to be stellar with two derby preps and a  group of graded races, but the best races to watch this weekend will be Maiden Special Weights.

Half siblings to Grade 1 winners Rachel Alexandra, Better Lucky, Violence, Super Saver and My Miss Aurelia will all be making their maiden debuts on Saturday and Sunday across the country, just a month and a half after they all turned three.

First to start will be Shathoor, a half brother to Grade 1 and juvenile champion My Miss Aurelia. Campaigned by Shadwell Stables and Daniel Peitz, the chestnut Distorted Humor colt is entered in Race 2 on Saturday at Oaklawn (post time is 1:35 EST). He's the 5/2 morning line favorite in the six furlong Maiden Special Weight on the main track.

An hour and a half later at Gulfstream Park, Charge Now will try a mile on the turf in Race 6. By Tiznow and trained by Bill Mott (with Jose Lezcano up), the colt is a half brother to Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and a full brother to Colonel John.

Next up, kicking off Sunday, will be Lucknow. The half sister to turf star Better Lucky by Medaglia d'Oro scores Johnny V for trainer Tom Albertrani in Race 6 at Gulfstream Park. She is scheduled to go seven furlongs on the dirt in her Maiden Special Weight, and as of now will be racing without lasix. Tune in to watch her run at 3:05 EST. Lucknow is owned by Darley Stables.

Fifty minutes later, Samantha Nicole will hit the track. Also by Medaglia d'Oro (like full her sister, Rachel Alexandra, and Lucknow), Samantha Nicole tries a mile and seventy yards over the main track at Fair Grounds. Post time is 3:55 EST for the Maiden Special Weight run as Race 4, and Rosie Napravnik will be aboard for Steve Asmussen. Stonestreet purchased this one right off the bat.

Closing off our weekend of siblings is Cinnamon Spice. Rick Porter's half sister to Violence by Candy Ride will be running in the last race at Gulfstream (Race 11 at 5:33) going seven and a half furlongs on the green stuff. The Chad Brown trainee, bred by Dell Ridge Farm, is probably against the toughest maiden field that will be assembled all weekend.

Welcome these half brothers and sisters to My Miss Aurelia, Better Lucky, Rachel Alexandra, Colonel John and Violence this weekend as they all make their maiden debuts!

She is a full sister. I didn't even catch that!
I believe Samantha Nicole is a full sister to Rachel Alexandra, not a half...
Wow! What a fun weekend of possibilities! I've been waiting a long time for Sam to make her debut :)
