Bruce Headley has been training horses for the
past 52 years and has won 14 stakes races at Del Mar during a career
that also has seen him saddle Kona Gold for a victory in the 2000
Breeders' Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs in stakes- and track-record
time.
The 77-year-old Headley won the 1991 Del Mar Futurity with
Bertrando, saddled winners of the Bing Crosby Stakes three times in a
four-year period (1998-2001) and won last summer's Real Good Deal Stakes
with M One Rifle.
But Headley has started only two horses at Del Mar this meet,
both in the first week of racing, and said this week he won't saddle
any more this summer.
For the first time since 1961, Headley will not win a race at Del Mar.
"I'm not here," Headley joked while on the phone from his Del
Mar home, just a stone's throw from the track. "I'm here in this
beautiful house of mine, in the cool air.
