Havre de Grace might face males in New Orleans

Havre De Grace wins 2011 Azeri.
Havre de Grace, who is likely to be named 2011's Horse of the Year later this month, has settled into her new home at Fair Grounds in New Orleans and began galloping under trainer Larry Jones this past weekend.

And Jones revealed Monday that he and owner Rick Porter might have a loftier comeback race in mind for Havre de Grace than the $100,000 New Orleans Ladies on March 17, mentioned as a possible launching pad for the mare's 2012 campaign when she arrived at Fair Grounds last week.

"We're considering that race, but we've also kind of looked at a race a couple weeks later called the New Orleans Handicap," Jones said. "We've got a lot of options with her. She'll tell us which way to go."

The $400,000 New Orleans Handicap will be contested on April 1 this year. Havre de Grace beat males once before when she won the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga. Read More

No reason to start off against males, but certainly wouldnt be appropriate to run in an ungraded stakes, there is a race at Oaklawn Park called the Grade 3 Azeri Stakes which has a $150k purse. Zenyatta's people felt no need to face males but 1 time per year, if facing less than stellar females was ok for her then it should be the same way with Grace.
  • stevebiscuit · So does that mean you'll give Grace will get a pass if she faces only fillies in 2012? At least Zenyatta could perform against two stellar groups of males. Grace beat a pathetic group of males in the Woodward and never threatened in the weakest Classic field we've seen in a long time. If she doesn't face males this year it's because her connections realize that she's simply not good enough. Zenyatta started out the year with a grade 1, not a grade 3, and she did so in a race that's seen the likes of Life Is Sweet, Nashoba's Key, Azeri, Jewel Princess, Paseana, Bayakoa, Lady's Secret, Glorious Song, Susan's Girl, Turkish Trousers, Gallant Bloom, Gamely, Silver Spoon, Bed O' Roses, Two Lea, and Busher. The Azeri has seen Round Pond...wow! You bash Zenyatta for supposedly picking the soft spots while giving Grace a pass for doing the same thing. Just be thankful Zenyatta retired because she would have dusted Havre De Grace anytime, anywhere. · 1596 days ago
