Happy New Year: 2013 Gets Underway at Laurel Park

   Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and GQ’s last Best Bet and Longshot of 2012,

   Should old acquaintance be forgot,
in hopes that GQ will pick winners in 2013.

It’s a new year, every thoroughbred in the world is a year older and what better way to start 2013 then to take a stab at the New Year’s Day card at Laurel Park. There are 9 exciting chase scenes on tap, each having no less than 7 runners.

Recapping the final posted selections at Laurel Park from Saturday, Dec. 29th had just 5 winners from 9 races (only 1 Top Selections; pay-offs shown in BOLD type) having $2 WIN pay-offs of $19.40 (1st race), $10.60 (2nd), $3.60 (3rd), $21.40 (7th), and $3.60 (9th).

Even though the day got off to a great start with a $124.60 Double payoff in the 2nd race followed by having the chalk on top in the 3rd, the day quickly headed south.

The BEST BET of the Day (13 5-1-2) D C Dancer (7-2 PT; 5-1 M/L) appeared to have a tough time getting going over the sloppy surface. He made a middle move but never got into contention and was not asked for his best as the jock recognized it wasn’t going to be his day, as he was 5th under the wire.

The LONGSHOT PICK (11 3-0-0) Laurie’s Choice (7-2 PT; 10-1 M/L) took a lot of action early in the wagering as she opened at 2-1. It seems that many others took note of the fact she had never been off-the-board (OTB) in 5 lifetime outings over an Off Track. That was until this race. On paper she was the only early speed in the race, but the jock on #2 (Senteya) decided to push his mount early. All that maneuver did was kill both Laurie’s Choice and Senteya, as both faltered after at the ¼ pole, finishing next the last (6th) and last (7th), respectively.

The end of 2012 brought the Laurel Park Fall Meet to a close, as well as finalizing GQ’s BEST BET and Longshot Plays record. Both took a hit in the last two postings of 2012 as neither hit the board. Still, a strong start helped the BEST BET realize 5 winners (38%) with 8 finishing in-the-money (61%) from 13 selections. Due to a few scratches, the LONGSHOT pick was in play 11 times resulting in 3 winners (27%).

For New Year’s Day races the weather forecast calls for Cloudy skies with just a 10% chance of precipitation, meaning the track will be FAST at Laurel Park on Tuesday Jan. 1st. Selections for all races posted were handicapped based on making multi-race wagers such as DOUBLE’s, Pick-3’s and Pick-4’s using all three (3) listed for each race in each leg.

Best of luck to Lacrosse Moon!
I printed out the selections for Race #2 to show Moon. Not sure how he will react to it though!

With bigger purses and full fields, I'm looking very much forward to healthy and a rejuvenated Maryland horse racing program!
