Garland of Roses: Kid Kate Faces Seven

A stakes winner at 2, 3, 4 and 5 years of age, Dell Ridge Farm’s Kid Kate hopes to go out a winner as she takes on a field of seven other filly and mare sprinters Saturday in the final race of her career, the $75,000 Garland of Roses at Aqueduct Racetrack.

A bay daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, Kid Kate took the Junior Champion Stakes at Monmouth Park as a juvenile, won the 2010 Belle Cherie at Belmont Park, was victorious in the Correction at the Big A and the Lady Tak and Rachel Alexandra at Saratoga Race Course in 2011, and added Belmont’s Classy Mirage to her resume this year.

“When you consider she’s won stakes races for me four consecutive years, you can’t do any better than that,” said trainer Chad Brown of Kid Kate, who most recently finished third as the favorite in the Pentelis overnight stakes on November 15. “She’s been a very consistent, classy filly and a pleasure to be around.”

While Brown feels Kid Kate is best-known for her stellar record of four wins and one second in five starts at the Spa, she has also been successful at Aqueduct, with one win, a second and two thirds in four Big A appearances.

“She’s been doing very well and I am pleased with the way she’s coming into Saturday’s race,” said Brown. “Hopefully, she can go out on a winning note.”

With Eddie Castro aboard, Kid Kate drew the outside post position 8 and was listed as the 2-1 favorite on the morning line for the six-furlong race.

Returning to the site of her first stakes victories is the Anthony Dutrow-trained Singlet, who opened her 3-year-old campaign with wins in a starter stakes and the Dearly Precious at Aqueduct. Fourth in the Big A’s Grade 3 Comely in April, Singlet has made three starts since, most recently finishing second in the Miss Woodford on September 1 at Monmouth.

“She’s been freshened up a bit and is ready for a winter campaign,” said Dutrow of the Real Quiet filly. “She’s doing really well.”

Mike Luzzi will ride the Michael Dubb color-bearer, 5-1 on the morning line, from post position 5.

Making her Aqueduct debut is Darley Stable’s Delightful Quality, who counts a maiden victory and three seconds among her four career starts, all this year. The 3-year-old Elusive Quality filly most recently finished second in a six-furlong allowance on September 23 at Belmont Park.

Cornelio Velasquez will ride Delightful Quality, the morning-line second choice at 5-2, from post position 6.

Morrow Cove, who was fourth behind next-out Grade 1 Gazelle winner Dance Card in the Belle Cherie overnight stakes on September 23, returned to post a last-to-first victory in the Raging Fever on November 2 at Aqueduct, her fourth win of the year.

“She came out of her last race very well,” said Whit Beckman, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher. “The plan is to keep her up here for a winter campaign, so we’re hopeful this will be a good step forward.”

The third choice at 7-2 on the morning line, Morrow Cove will leave from post position 4 under Junior Alvarado.

Rounding out the field are Curlina, fifth in the Pentelis last time out; Withgreatpleasure, runner-up in the Cornucopia on November 20 at Parx Racing, and the Eric Reed-trained supplementary entry of Jelly Cable and Moonlit Malibu.
