Game On Dude Survives Inquiry in Big Cap

Game On Dude won a controversial running of the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday, giving jockey Chantal Sutherland the distinction of being the first woman rider to win the historic race – and the first woman rider to be booed as she rode into the winner’s circle.

Game On Dude survived a 12-minute inquiry by track stewards into a bumping incident in early stretch involving the 14-1 winner, runner-up Setsuko, and 1-2 favorite Twirling Candy.

After a lengthy review, stewards Scott Chaney, Kim Sawyer, and Tom Ward voted 2-1 to not change the order of finish, ruling that Twirling Candy initiated contact that led to bumping between the horses. The stewards ruled that Twirling Candy drifted to the inside, struck Game On Dude and caused the winner to tip to the outside, resulting in a chain reaction of bumping among Game on Dude, Twirling Candy, and Setsuko, who raced farthest wide.

Chaney and Ward voted to make no change, while Sawyer argued for a disqualification, Ward said.

The decision was met with a chorus of boos from the ontrack crowd of 23,304, a reaction that surprised Sutherland, 35. The victory was her fourth win of the meeting.

either way game on dude had alot of spunk!! and shows he has the talent to go to dubai
There was no way that Game on Dude or Setsuko should've been DQ'd. Watch the replay without bias and you'll see VERY clearly that Twirling Candy was basically a ping pong ball off Game On Dude & Setsuko, hitting both horses twice. That was a pitiful ride by Joel Rosario, Twirling Candy went into that stretch with nothing left and showed it by how he staggered into both horses. Espinoza showed his lack of professionalism by complaining that he wasn't put in 1st on Setsuko, he seems to forget that Sutherland on Dude was hit twice also.
very well could have been.
"Jocks who are on mounts that have a hard time changing leads often shift their weight one side to the other to FORCE the horse to get on the correct lead. In the Big Cap, the sudden shift of the betting favorite could have well have been caused by that maneuver."
right call, he couldn't control Tc. Tc wanted the lead the whole time and started the trouble.i think tc can actaully handle the distance, he just seems like a hot head like tapizar he just wants to go. anyway it's to bacd he had that biad luck, because even if he ciouldn't win he might have been able to hit the board.just bad luck he took most of the bumbing and wore him down causing him to do much worse then he was capable. it's also sad setsuko got hurt. hope he can bounce back soon. i thought game on dude would win, but not thanks to this cluster of events.
I thought the right call was made...
Mr. Mandella should appeal. The two stewards should be fired.
It was a great call! Twirling Candy was toast, he was backing up and Rosario shifted his weight so much to get Twirling Candy to shift leads but in doing so drifted over and hit the back side of Game On Dude which caused Game On Dude to come in, how can you not see that. Watch Rosario!! And Setsuko made it tight for Twirling Candy also. No doubt that Game On Dude bumped Twirling Candy which caused to hit Setsuko, but Twirling Candy initiated the bumper car effect.
I only got one view footlick thanks for the info as I thought TC initiated contact.
You don't whip a horse left-handed around a left-hand turn. Game On Dude came out into Twirling Candy's path on the far turn. He was the horse that started it all. But it is over and done with now, and all we have to show for it is an injured Setsuko.
Who Initiated Contact?
Bloodhorse.com.....Stewards ruled that Twirling Candy came inward coming off the turn and caused his own problems and did not change the order of finish. "The whole chain reaction series of events was caused by the middle horse (Twirling Candy)," said steward Scott Chaney. He said the vote was 2-1 to make no change. Chaney explained that Twirling Candy started the incident by hitting Game On Dude's hindquarters and tipping him into the favorite. Twirling Candy then bumped Setsuko on the outside, who bumped back, he said.
What The _ _ _ _? Baffert Rules SA!! Sutherland was 2 out from rail around corner, clearly went toward center of track after corner, Squeezed Twirling Candy out to also interfear with Setsuko an as Espi said - "knocked the wind out of my horse". Setsuko was hosed in the SA Derby last year with trouble not his fault. Now gets Totally HOSED in the Big Cap. The stewards conduct in this 12 minute wrong decision shows the politics of SA. Anyone else but Baffert would be DQ'd in 2 minutes of inquiry with the right decision, not 12 minutes and the HUGE PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT the grey one gets. Boo to you stewards....Setsuko betters---you were tatooed

Twirling Candy lightly bumped Game On Dude, but that contact was the reason he proceeded to move outward. It's a tough call, but I don't think it caused Setsuko the race at all. He had every chance and actually took the lead, but Game On Dude was game indeed.
This expalnation was a joke. The contact Twirling Candy initiated was very minor. The whole incident was caused when Sutherland hit her horse left handed and he veered out sharply bumping Twirling Candy severly, she hit him a second time and he again veered out bumping Twirling Candy again. I agree Twirling Candy was not going to win, but to give such a crock of an explanation is sad. If the stewards thought it didn't cost Twirling Candy a better placing, then just say that. This was clearly a case of the stewards trying to justify their decision to the public rather than tell the truth of the matter.
This was a correct no call. Twirling Candy put himself in an awkward spot and was not going to win anyway.

i have never watch the 3 blind stewards miss this. a very bad no change.if a horse makes a horse get bumb by a horse the horse must go behind twirling candy.over 200 people told me no more santa antia till this con is fix.36 years @santa antia never saw a bull shirt non call.. if we as a racetrack workers want morepeople from commimg to track.keep this bull up. i did not bet race ., but so piss off the pubic got it in the a hole.
I could not believe there was no change I thought they would have taken her down right away. It seemed very clear on the screen and the replays that she came over and initiated the bumping. I followed the track lines and she was in Twirling Candy's lane as far as I can see.
