Gabriel Charles, Ethnic Dance Score at Del Mar

Utilizing opposite styles to achieve the same result, Gabriel Charles and Ethnic Dance won divisions of the featured Grade II Del Mar Derby Sunday, championship event of the summer season for three-year-olds.

Gabriel Charles came from off the pace to win the first division of the nine-furlong contest over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course, while Ethnic Dance led from wire-to-wire to win the second section of the stakes fixture, the first time since l970 that it was presented in divisions

In the first division, 9-5 favored Gabriel Charles, beaten only a head in the second division of the Oceanside Stakes on opening-day of the meeting, rallied in the stretch under the expert handling of Hall of Famer Mike Smith to score by 1 ¼ lengths in 1:46.94 for the distance.

Gervinho, victor in the Oceanside Stakes first division July 17, closed stoutly to be second, a head in front of pacesetter Redwood Kitten, with Procurement fourth in the field of ten.

Gabriel Charles, a son of Street Hero owned by Sam Britt and Michael House and trained by Jeff Mullins, earned $150,000 with his third win in seven starts and paid $5.80, $3.60 and $3. Gervinho paid $6.20 and $4.20, while Redwood Kitten returned $6.40 to show.

By contrast, Ethnic Dance, masterfully rated by Edwin Maldonado, was able to crawl on the lead through slow fractions and then had enough left to win by 1 ¼ lengths over eastern invader Infinite Magic, with Den’s Legacy third. Dice Flavor, the 9-2 favorite in a wide-open betting race, was tenth and last. The final time was 1:48.24

Ethnic Dance, a California-bred son of Tribal Race, is owned by the Craig Stables of Jenny Craig and Michael Bello and trained by John Sadler. Going postward at 5-1, he returned $13.80, $7.20 and $5 after his third victory in only seven starts. Like Gabriel Charles, his prize for victory was $150,000 and increased his earnings to $249,850.

Infinite Magic, winner of the American Derby at Arlington Park in mid-July, paid $7,40 and $4.20, while Den’s Legacy returned $4.60 to show.

Both Del Mar Derby divisions offered guaranteed purses of $250,000 each.

I know he is only three, but Gabriel Charles looks like a BC Mile contender to me.
