Chester and Mary Broman’s Friend Or Foe,
scratched from Monday’s Evan Shipman Stakes, turned in a five-furlong breeze
Wednesday morning at Saratoga Race Course in preparation for the Grade 1 Whitney
Invitational Handicap on August 6. The New York-bred son of Friends Lake was clocked in 1:00.23, fifth-fastest
of 23 moves at the distance.
“It had been nine days since his
last workout and I wanted to give him something before the Whitney,” said
trainer John Kimmel, who scratched the 4-year-old from the Evan Shipman when the
track came up sloppy following heavy rainstorms Monday afternoon. “This was his
last serious work before the race. His workout was pleasant to watch. It was
nice and steady. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:13 3/5 and seven furlongs in
1:27 2/5. He came back to the barn in good shape. He looks good.”
Victorious in the Empire Classic
and Mike Lee for statebreds in 2010, Friend Or Foe most recently defeated Grade
1 winner Rail Trip by a head in the Easy Goer overnight stakes on June 5, his
first start this year. He made three attempts in graded stakes company as a
sophomore, finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy, sixth in the Grade 1
Travers and fifth in the Grade 1 Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile.
