Endorsement Wins Sunland Derby

Endorsement wins the 2010 Sunland Derby
Facing winners for the first time, WinStar Farm's Endorsement shipped to Sunland Park and Casino from Louisiana and handed Triple Crown contender Conveyance his first defeat in the $800,000 Sunland Derby (gr. III) in New Mexico March 28.

In its first year as a graded stakes, the Sunland Derby produced quite a surprise in the 11-1 shot Endorsement, a son of Distorted Humor making his fourth lifetime start. Out of the A.P. Indy mare Charmed Gift, the $450,00 Keeneland yearling purchase in September 2008 was coming off a 2 1/4-length maiden score at Oaklawn Park Feb. 20. Read More

Conveyance, unmolested on moderate fractions, had better find some more late run of that one will be watching May 1st.
Agree. Endorsement has a very nice pedigree for distance with Distorted Humor on the top out of an AP Indy mare. And yes, if Lucky or Eskendereya don't win, this thing is wide, wide open.
Distorted Humor is the number three -dirt sire currently, the finish was impressive. A mile & a quarter won't be a problem. Rule & Conveyance will need to modify their front in style in a 20 horse field. I hate to say this, but the Derby is getting tougher to pick!!! A very "Hard Spun" like run.
Looked at the fractions and the early going was pedestrian (23.7 48.04 and 1:11.9). Thinks picked up in the final two furlongs and Endorsement finished with a sub :13 final eighth. Not very impressive but I told myself on May 2, 2009 to not dismiss the winner of the Sunland Derby this year so duly noted...Endorsement remains a contender for now.
Endorsement has a decent pedigree. By Distorted Humor out of a G-3 stakes placed mare by A.P. Indy. His second dam was a champion in Argentina and second damsire was a long winded runner over the lawn. Endorsement's trainer Shannon Ritter is an excellent, dedicated horsewoman and a former Asst. Trainer to Elliott Walden. She went out on her own after Elliott retired.
Ok, I watched this race and it's really worth watching. Very basic, Conveyance on the lead and then Endorsement tracking, followed by Nacho Friend and Tempted to Tapit. They all got solid trips. But for some reason, Endorsement had a ton, powered away from the unchallenged frontrunner and won with ease. The three horses he put away were coming off Beyer figs of 96, 93 and 91, so they weren't bums. Maybe he's just getting good at the right time? What does everyone else think?
Endorsement certainly has the pedigree. Probably just as good as anything we have seen the past two weeks.
So, is this horse for real?
