Eleven Face Wise Dan in Shadwell Turf Mile

Wise Dan and jockey John Velazquez win the Grade 2, $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga Race Course.
Morton Fink’s Wise Dan, last seen at Keeneland smashing the main track record in a 10½-length victory in the Ben Ali (G3) in April, headlines a field of 12 entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 27th running of the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1).

The Shadwell Turf Mile serves as the centerpiece of the 10-race Saturday card that features five graded stakes races, including the $400,000 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (G1) that drew an overflow field of 14 with two also-eligibles, and the $350,000 First Lady (G1) that attracted six entrants.

The Shadwell Turf Mile, a “Win and You’re In” race for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) to be run November 3 at Santa Anita, will go as the ninth race Saturday with a 5:21 p.m. (ET) post time. First post time is 1:05 p.m.

Trained by Charles Lopresti, Wise Dan brings a two-race winning streak on grass into Saturday’s race. In his most recent start, Wise Dan earned a trip to the Breeders’ Cup with a “Win and You’re In” victory in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) by 3¼ lengths. Prior to that, Wise Dan won the Fourstardave (G2) by five lengths at Saratoga.

Jose Lezcano has the mount Saturday on Wise Dan. Fourth in this race last year, Wise Dan will break from post position five.

Chief among the opposition to Wise Dan is Stuart Janney III’s Data Link. Trained by Shug McGaughey, Data Link will seek to become the first horse to win the Maker’s 46 Mile (G1) and Shadwell Turf Mile in the same year. Alex Solis has the mount on Data Link, who will break from post position seven.

Taking on older horses for the first time will be the 3-year-old Silver Max, owned by Mark Bacon and Dana Wells. Trained by Dale Romans, Silver Max won the Transylvania (G3) here this spring in the first of five wire-to-wire stakes victories that was highlighted with a triumph in the $600,000 Virginia Derby (G2). Robby Albarado has the call on Silver Max, who will break from post position 10.

The field for the Shadwell Turf Mile, from the inside out, is as follows: Skyring (Rajiv Maragh, 123 pounds), Doubles Partner (Javier Castellano, 126), Corporate Jungle (Paco Lopez, 126), Willcox Inn (James Graham, 126), Wise Dan (Jose Lezcano, 126), Worthadd (IRE) (Luis Contreras, 126), Data Link (Alex Solis, 126), Slip and Drive (Alex Cintron, 126), Ol Army (Jesus Castanon, 123), Silver Max (Robby Albarado, 123), Dominus (Julien Leparoux, 126) and Swift Warrior (Jose Espinoza, 126).

Wise Dan's race to lose. A 3yo isn't going to beat him.
Data Link. That is all.
Wise Dan is a monster in the making but if he doesn't fire his best shot (BC Mile is his real target), Double's Partner and Data Link can roll late. Nice ML on them too.
I like Silver Max here. He's going to be hard to catch at a mile
Strong field..Wise Dan and Silver Max are definitely on the rise but I'll be putting some money on Doubles Partner and Data Link.
nice field. could be an interesting race.
Looks like I'll get to see Silver Max take on Wise Dan before the Breeder's Cup. I might be the only person left that thinks there's still one 3 year old waiting to make a statement in 2012. I'm excited
