Dream comes true for Dewey's Special

Trainer Ron Ellis and jockey Jose Valdivia, who might shoot for the biggest stake of the summer here, the Pacific Classic with Hollywood Gold Cup winner Rail Trip, combined to win one of the lesser ones yesterday, the California Dreamin' Handicap.

Dewey's Special covered 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:40.85 under Valdivia for Ellis and produced a three-quarter-length victory over Nitro Active in the ungraded, $100,000 event restricted to California breds.
