Discreet Marq: Lone speed is always dangerous

Pick 4 NYRA
It may be the most valuable angle of all in handicapping the horse races … find a horse loose on the lead with virtually no early pressure, and more times than not you are looking at either a winner, or at the very least, a horse that will outrun its odds. It doesn’t always pan out as it appears on paper, and sometimes even lone speed can spit the bit in the stretch, but it’s a tried-and-true angle that has paid big dividends since racing began. Memorial Day’s Sands Point at Belmont Park looks to be just such an ideal situation for the speedy Discreet Marq.

O-for-2 so far in 2013, Discreet Marq ran two solid races while losing a pair of stakes races at Gulfstream Park. Neither her 3rd in the Ginger Brew or her 2nd in the Sweetest Chant were bad, but both were races where her early speed was tested in the first half mile. The resulting game, but ultimately losing efforts, were easy to predict considering she had to work early to maintain her early leader position. The last time she was able to coast on the early lead resulted in an easy 17-1 score in last fall’s Lie Low Stakes. She won’t be anywhere near that high on Monday, but considering the race setup, I believe her to be a wonderful play in the top spot.

The Sands Point has attracted a small but solid field of six. Other than Discreet Marq, the other five fillies in the race come in with solid credentials. Wave Theory defeated my choice in the Ginger Brew, and Caroline Thomas just missed passing her in the Sweetest Chant. Kitten’s Queen will likely be the long shot of the field, but the lightly raced daughter of Kitten’s Joy is eligible to improve. Vieing for favoritism should be Watsdachances, a two-time stakes winner who was 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last fall, and from the clouds winner of the recent Appalachian Stakes, Unbelievable Dream. The problem with these five is that none of them have any real early speed. Of course, that is no problem at all for Discreet Marq.

Oh, and by the way, another positive betting angle can be tabbing a horse who runs first time for a successful trainer. Once again, Discreet Marq fits the bill. On Monday, she will run for the first time for high win percentage trainer, Christophe Clement. Clement likes to win at Belmont and he likes to win on the turf. All the more reason to look for a wire-to-wire score for Discreet Marq in the Sands Point.

Memorial Day at Belmont not only brings us excellent racing, but it also hits hard with an all-graded stakes Pick 4 that comes with a guarantee of at least a cool half million in the kitty. As a horizontal man, the multi-race wager is my favorite bet, and it doesn’t get much more classy than the Sands Point - Ogden Phipps - Acorn - Met Mile sequence monday at Belmont. With the lone speed, Discreet Marq, and the Belmont loving, Flat Out, anchoring the opener and the closer of the Pick 4, I will try to beat the vulnerable favorites, Joyful Victory and Kauai Katie to cash in big on the holiday. Not bad work if you can get it!
