As California Chrome was romping home in the Derby last
Saturday, DerbyWars player Toga was taking home two jackpots. Robert Knowles,
or Toga as he’s known on the site, managed to take home both the $25,000 Derby
Day Game as well as the $15,000 Derby Day High Stakes game on DerbyWars.
Knowles has been handicapping for 30 years, the last 15 of
which he has taken more seriously. His home track is Saratoga Race Course
(hence the nickname, “Toga”) and he has been attending races there since he was
$25,000 Derby Day Game Game
Knowles score in the $25K Derby Day Game netted him a $5,000
cash prize as well as an automatic entry into the $30,000 Triple Crown Finals
on July 6th, which will include National Handicapping Championship
spots for the top two contenders.
Knowles made some big scores early in this game, the first using
the 7th race at Belmont to bring in $36 with the capped horse Vicksburg
“I pretty much used the same
horses in both contests where I could,” Knowles says. “Global View (Churchill,
in the 8th race) and Central Banker (Churchill in the 9th
race) along with two big plays at Belmont (Five Iron in the 10th and Vicksburg
Bluffs) were keys to my winning, and horses that I had picked early in the
morning when I do the nuts and bolts of my handicapping for the day.”
Using these choices he was able to beat out 116 other players to make it to the first place spot. He says the key to winning is to commit to your picks. “Don’t
start changing them because you get down early in a contest,” he says. “Something
I have done too many times. Of course, there comes a time when you have to ‘cap
on the fly to put you in contention, but don’t do it too early.”
"It got real loud when Five Iron made his move."
$15,000 High Stakes Derby Day
Knowles also managed to net $10,000 in cash for winning the $15K High Stakes game on on Saturday, using many of the same horses he was able to
win the $25K game with. Although he didn’t pick California Chrome to win the big race (he
had Candy Boy), Knowles says he had a lot of fun handicapping from a friend’s
house on Derby day. “I was at friends
house for the annual Derby Party betting on the computer and drinking too many
beers. So I watched the races on the large screen and it got real loud when
Five Iron made his move.”
He was able to score big in the first two races at Churchill Downs with two large payoffs, Jessica's Star who brought in 16.80 and Coffee Clique with $22.60. Since many of the other top players also had these picks, it came down to the two horses he had 'capped in the morning, Global View and Central Banker, that helped him pull to the front.
"DerbyWars is one, if not the premier horse racing contest site on the net!"
Knowles says he found the DerbyWars site a little more than a year ago, and considers it "one, if not the premier horse racing contest site on the net."
"People can play for small buy-ins to get used to the contest strategy and ups and downs that come during the contest," says Knowles.
Knowles himself has clearly gotten used to the contest strategy, netting in all $15,000 in cash and a spot in the $30,000 NHC qualifier in July.
