Del Mar wants to host Breeders' Cup

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club outside of San Diego has sent an informational package to Breeders’ Cup expressing interest in hosting a future edition of the organization’s year-end event, the Breeders’ Cup’s chief executive said on Tuesday.

The packet did not specify when the track would like to host the event, said Breeders’ Cup chief Craig Fravel, who is the former president and general manager of Del Mar. The track, which is typically open from late July through early September, would need to expand its turf course in order to host the early November event, a renovation that is included in a development plan currently being considered by the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the state agency that owns the property.

im telling ya, if you move it up a few weeks to mid october saratoga is the best place. the weather wouldnt bbe a problem in mid october. whats wrong with the biggest event in horse racing at the best venue in horse racing?
Besides widening the turf course, how much will it cost to switch the main track back to dirt. Or, bring on the 1000 comment threads afterwards.
I have spoken with people who never want the Brereder's Cup to return as THEY , the local track, get no say in putting any aspect of the event on, and the price is exorbatant as well
I think there is a lot more than weather, surface, location that is considered when hosting an event like the the Breeders Cup. Even if the tracks are willing to make the needed accommodations for such an event, they might want to ensure they get as much out of it as they can and not want to get one year in a row out of it
as long as there is synthetic racing in the US, then a track with a synthetic surface should be able to host. If the East Coast doesn't want to participate, then they don't.
The main reason I want other tracks to host the BC is that I think by moving it around more fans can get out and see the BC and it would be good for racing. The last thing I want to see is Santa Anita become a permanent host. We do not need Frank Stronach having a stranglehold on any more of horse racing.
I'm not hugely in favor. I wish it could be held somewhere in New York, but being outside for hours on end during the winter in New York is a death sentence. No thanks to both.
Del Mar , in its previous configuration and surface situation would have been a venue for the BC other than the small capacity...Also if would require starting it up off season, a nightmare for staffing it.
funny stuff. Those who have little to no experience with this game tend to live in the last two decades
Limited to the normal three year old season, as Bold Lad imprssed elsewhere
I hope the can host it. I personally like the idea of the Breeders Cup being staged at different race tracks around the country and in Canada.
Gotta tell ya, at least half the comments you make are senseless, but to stay on point....No, to the Breeders Cup hosted on anymore Polytrack surfaces!!! Not because the Euros win more than when the BC is hosted at a dirt track, all it is is a 2nd turf course. IMO, there is no difference between the 2. Just look at all the winners of the Grade 1 races run on main track at Keeneland & see where decide to run on Breeders Cup day.
no no and no is a senseless comment
No, No & No
Upstate New York in Novermber? Your'e kidding as Saratoga has no winterized stands
del mar would be the worst surface to host the breeders cup. i believe that they should mmove the breeders cup up a week or two and have it at saratoga! think of the turn out. other tracks normally average 25,000 fans on a weekend. saratoga averages 30,000 on a weekday! 40,000-45,000 on a weekend. saratoga would the best place to hold this event.
get rid of the fake surfaces, no east coast horses will attend. it's a terrible surface
Euro's should love the artifical surfaces
A beautiful racetrack to be sure. But both surfaces tend to be quirky, imo.
All they need to do is widen the turf course and that's it. Del Mar would be a perfect place to host the Cup because the atmosphere, people and the energy is great. I will definitely show up!
