Jockey Tyler Baze suffered a terrible accident at Del Mar on the fourth day of the meeting last summer and was out nearly nine months before he was able to race.
His mantra coming into the Del Mar meeting this summer, after getting injured here the last few years, was, predictably, “I just want to get through the meeting.”
But now Baze has a new mantra. “I just want to stay sober.”
Baze was given permission by the Del Mar stewards to ride at Del Mar Wednesday after he passed a Breathalyzer as required by the state stewards at the track.
