Del Mar Conducts Pacific Classic T-Shirt Design Contest

Del Mar logo
There will be a new twist to a favorite giveaway item at Del Mar this summer as the track conducts its first ever “You-Design-the-T-shirt” contest with the winner’s art gracing T-shirts on its biggest racing afternoon -- Pacific Classic Day, Sunday, August 25.

Entries for the contest open today (July 1) and all information regarding submittals can be obtained online at dmtc.com/shirtcontest  Besides the pride attached to seeing thousands of racing fans wearing his/her handiwork, the contest winner also will earn a check for $1,000 and the opportunity for a VIP day at the races.

Del Mar has featured T-shirt giveaways in the past, including Pacific Classic ones. But a fan-designed shirt is believed to be a first in the racing industry. The general theme behind the shirt design is Del Mar’s “Cool As Ever” brand, allowing for a wide range of interpretation.

“We came up with the idea in one of our marketing meetings and it just sounded and felt right,” said Chris Bahr, Del Mar’s director of events and promotions. “We believe the thought of having one of our fans come up with an original racing idea to share with all is a true winner.”

Fans will be able to submit their designs from July 1 to July 22. Individuals may submit up to two separate designs each. A Del Mar panel of judges then will select the Top 10 designs and post them on the contest website for fan voting, which will take place between July 24 and August 4. The winning design and the name of the designer will be announced Wednesday, August 7. A complete set of rules for the contest is available on the contest website.

The T-shirts will be long-sleeved and offered in five sizes – small, medium, large, extra large and extra extra large. All fans in attendance at Del Mar on Pacific Classic Day will receive a T-shirt, sponsored by TVG, with a paid or pre-paid admission while supplies last.

The TVG Pacific Classic will have its 23rd running this year. The $1,000,000 mile and one-quarter for 3-year-olds and up will headline the day’s 11-race card with first post that afternoon at 1 p.m. The TVG Network, which sponsors the Pacific Classic, also is the sponsor for the T-shirt contest.

Del Mar’s 37-day racing season opens on Wednesday, July 17.
