Dance to Bristol Extendes Winning Streak in Bed o' Roses

Belmont Park
Dance to Bristol extended her winning streak to five by coming from just off the pace to win the Grade 3, $150,000 Bed o’ Roses Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park.

Seeking her first graded stakes triumph, Dance to Bristol raced in third as Fantasy of Flight set fractions of 23.01 and 45.80 seconds. Kept outside of Fantasy of Flight and Delightful Quality, Dance to Bristol made a steady advance in the three path and took over at the top of the stretch, inching away under Xavier Perez’s drive to win by 2 ¾ lengths over Fantasy of Flight.

Dance to Bristol, the 8-5 favorite, returned $5.30 for a $2 win wager and completed seven furlongs in 1:20.81. It marked the first graded stakes win for both Perez and trainer Ollie Figgins, III.

“I let her do what she always does, which is break good and settle behind horses,” said Perez. “When I asked her to run - to put her on the outside - I did it right away because she doesn’t like to be between horses too much. I tried to get her on the best part of the track, and I did. Approaching the quarter pole, I just shook my reins at her a little bit and she just took off running. Down from the quarter pole to the wire was just an easy jog for her.”

Dance to Bristol’s streak began this winter at Laurel Park when she won a pair of optional claimers at Laurel Park. Since then, the 4-year-old daughter of Speightstown has raced exclusively in stakes, taking the Sugar Maple in April at Charles Town and the Skipat on May 17 at Pimlico.

“Whenever you have a [winning] streak like that, it’s just hard for a horse to perform like that every time, and she seems to do it, somehow,” said Figgins. “As long as she stays healthy, hopefully it will keep happening.”

Owned by Susan H. Wantz, Dance to Bristol is 8-7-0 in 16 starts and has earned $500,880. Her Bed o’ Roses win was worth $90,000.

Delightful Quality was third, followed by slow-starting Withgreatpleasure and Willet.
