Creative Cause Ready for San Vicente

Creative Cause and Rafael Bejarano win the Best Pal Stakes(GII)at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, CA. August 06, 2011

Creative Cause makes his much-anticipated 3-year-old debut next Sunday in the San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs, and Joel Rosario is counting down to post time for the Grade II race he hopes will lead to greater glory on the Triple Crown trail, including the April 7 Santa Anita Derby and beyond.

Trained by Mike Harrington for owner Heinz Steinmann, Creative Cause will be making his first start since finishing third by a length despite a wide trip in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs last Nov. 5. Prior to that, the gray son of Giant’s Causeway won the Grade I Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita by 3 ¼ lengths on Oct. 1. Rosario was aboard each time.

“I haven’t worked him, but he’s been working good,” Rosario said. “He’s a nice horse and I’m sure he’s doing good.”

Creative Cause has been working smartly and steadily at his Hollywood Park headquarters, producing a bullet 1:11 3/5 drill for six furlongs on Jan. 28, fastest of 20 at the distance that day, and another Sunday morning, going six furlongs in a bullet 1:11.40, fastest of 17 at the distance. The average time was 1:14.07.

“He worked very nice,” Harrington said. “He seems to be coming up to the race fine.”

Continued Rosario: “It looks like he could be a little fresh coming off a layoff, but he’s a great horse and I love to ride him. His Breeders’ Cup race was a good one. I was impressed with it. Maybe he’s the right horse for the Derby, who knows?”

In other San Vicente news: Del Mar Futurity winner Drill worked five furlongs on Santa Anita’s main track Sunday in 1:02, but Bob Baffert was still non-committal on whether the son of Lawyer Ron would run.

Creative Cause loved Santa Anita in his Norfolk win. Hope he is Rosario's Derby winner. And so 2012 begins for him. Good luck, gorgeous.
