Celtic Princess Looking at Mabee

Scratched Saturday morning from a date with males in the Eddie Read, A.C. Avila-trained 7-year-old mare Celtic Princess is now being aimed to take on her own gender in the Grade II, $250,000 John C. Mabee on August 14.

“I had a nice conversation with the owners  and we decided to go in the Mabee and if that goes well then the Yellow Ribbon (in October at Santa Anita),” Avila said Sunday morning.

It wasn’t so much the male competition, Avila said, as the timing.

“She ran last time on the Fourth of July and she runs better with at least five weeks between races.”
