Circustown Stables’ Calliope Jane, always among the
leaders, continued willingly when set down for the drive to be best by
three-quarters of a length in Friday’s $43,000 six-furlong feature for
accredited Louisiana-bred fillies and mares.
Trained by Bret Calhoun and ridden by Jamie
Theriot, Calliope Jane paid $8.60, $5.20 and $3.80, toured the distance in
1:11.27 and increased her career earnings to $73,145 with her second victory in
nine lifetime starts.
Danny Caldwell’s Hella Bella pressed the pace
throughout, could not withstand the late surge of the winner but withstood Ken
Hollis Jr.’s Golden Lady Lee by a nose.
Golden
Lady Lee alternated for the lead with Jenine Tate’s Classic Ide, held
onto the show spot late but had no rally against the top two.
Hella
Bella returned mutuels of $34.80 and $18.20 while Golden Lady Lee paid $6.20
following early splits of 22.07 and 46.02.
Racing
resumes Saturday at Fair Grounds with an 11-race program beginning at 12:40 p.m.
