Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Snow Chief, the only living California-bred to have won a Triple Crown race, died on Saturday at Eagle Oak Ranch in Paso Robles, California.
After finishing 11th as the 2.10-to-1 favorite in the 1986 Kentucky Derby (G1), which was won by Ferdinand, Snow Chief bounced back in the Preakness by contesting Groovy for the early lead before drawing off in the stretch to post a four-length victory under regular rider Alex Solis.
