Gio Ponti rolls in the 2009 Man O' War
Gio Ponti will make his final career start in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs, his connections announced Thursday. Gio Ponti had been pre-entered in both the Mile and Breeders’ Cup Classic, with the Classic listed as his first preference.

“Having discussed the options with [trainer] Christophe Clement, we both feel that we should aim Gio Ponti for the Mile as eight furlongs looks to be his perfect distance given his impressive repeat victory in the Shadwell Mile at Keeneland,” said Shane Ryan, president of Castleton Lyons, Gio Ponti’s owner.

What the Nation is saying about Breeders’ Cup: Gio Ponti will start in Mile...

What a great, no GREAT horse. This horse may have lost a step, maybe not. He still looks really good. He is the only horse in the breeders cup that could get in the money in both the classic and the mile. Im not sure that if he didnt train for the classic that this turf horse couldn't win the classic. If uncle mo can get the distance, this might be the next best horse in the BCC. I think he has a good shot at Goldakova, she is and should be the favorite, but GP is one of about or 4 that could upset her. What a great way to end his carreer, Gio Ponte, good luck and thanks for the lifetime of great races;-)
this one has lost the tough competitive edge he used to have....Close but no cigar.
he's got a shot. Good Luck GP.
Good choice and great horse!
