Belmont Stakes 2014 Ratings Skyrocket

As reported in Daily Variety, television ratings for the Belmont Stakes on Saturday skyrocketed over last year’s numbers, attracting a near-record 20.6 million viewers from 3:23 PDT to 4:15 p.m. PDT, according to Nielson. This represented the second highest number of viewers for the Belmont ever, as only Smarty Jones’s Triple Crown attempt in 2004 attracted more (21.9 million). Not surprisingly, total viewership increased by seven million people over last year’s numbers.

In the all-important 18-49 demographic, the Belmont registered an impressive 4.0 rating on NBC. The last Triple Crown attempt, which came with Big Brown in 2008, attracted 13.1 million viewers on ABC, making this year’s Triple Crown finale on NBC a 57 percent winner by comparison.

Also reported in Daily Variety: “According to Adobe Analytics, fans live-streamed 6.8 million minutes of the Belmont Stakes on NBC Sports Live Extra—the NBC Sports Group’s live streaming product for desktops, mobile devices, and tablets—a record for any horse race streamed by NBC Sports Digital . . . The Belmont Stakes was watched by 389,680 unique viewers.”

Gald ESPN is gone. Crappy reporting from ignorant reporters
rafi, If you remember, ESPN frequently had racing scheduled on weekend afternoons (until a few years ago), and they pre-empted the races for whatever was on ahead of the appointed race time. It was extremely irritating, and a write-in protest ensued. When ESPN stopped showing the undercards for the TC and BC races, all racing ceased to be shown on their channels. They were not "good stewards" for the sport, and I doubt they will resume raceday programming.
rafi, I think you're spot on. For example, I want to see the Foster this weekend but I can't because I don't have HRTV only TVG. Going back to ESPN would be nice.
Plus, the parties everyone has where anywhere from 10-200 people are all watching at one household. Same goes for Boxing PPV's. The bigger it is, the more watch in groups. This number is upbeat in a way. Horse racing continues to have viewers when big races are on, but that is all. More nationally televised horse racing could help a lot, IMO. Maybe get a one hour slot every saturday on ESPN to show a major race. It could give some major publicity, IMO.
Absolutely Vodka , On a Football Sunday. Those places are paccked wall to wall . I am sure when they are wooing the potential sponsors , these viewers have relevance.
Or those at a local bar or sports bar
I've always felt that these numbers are flawed and never do present a true picture, not only here but in any live Sporting Event . What about the Millions that were not home to watch . They were at either their local Racetrack or Wagering establishment . They obviously were not included in the live attendance. Where were they considered ?
