Beholder Working Smartly at Santa Anita

Double Eclipse Award winner Beholder worked five furlongs in company Saturday morning in 1:00.80 under Gary Stevens as the daughter of Henny Hughes nears her 4-year-old debut, likely next month.

Beholder was timed in 1:00.80, while stablemate Tiz Champ went in 1:01.20.

“She couldn’t look better,” said Richard Mandella, who trains her for owner B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm. “She galloped out (six furlongs) in (one) 13 and change. I didn’t let her do too much.”

A champion at two and three, Beholder has not raced since demolishing her rivals, including alpha females Royal Delta and Princess of Sylmar, in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita last Nov. 1.
