Lothenbach Stables’ Bearpath,
who fractured his left shoulder running in the John’s Call presented by Sportech
at Saratoga on
August 5, continues to recuperate in trainer Ian Wilkes’
Clare Court
barn.
“He’s happy,” Wilkes said. “Hanging in there. He’s enjoying life, he’s
comfortable and he takes care of himself. It’s amazing how much he takes care of
himself.”
Because of the injury, when Bearpath moves in his stall, he hops on three
legs. He lies down in his stall to rest and get off his feet, though he will put
weight on his injured leg. Wilkes’ primary concern is laminitis, but the trainer
is encouraged by Bearpath’s attitude.
“He’s not stressed or anything,” Wilkes noted. “The biggest thing is
you’re watching for is laminitis. You see, he stands on it, which is good. Even
though he hops, he stands on it. He gets down on his own, he lays down, he gets
up. So, we’re getting there. He might make it; I hope so. He loves the
attention, loves his visitors. If you’ve got carrots, he’ll be happy to see
you.”
A 5-year old son of Dynaformer, Bearpath won the Grade 3 Pan American
Stakes at Gulfstream
Park last March and was second in 2010’s Grade 1 Sword
Dancer at
Saratoga .
