The thought of the victory by Make Music For Me in Saturday’s seventh race
put a smile on trainer Alexis Barba as she watched workouts from the
backstretch stands Sunday morning.
“He’s such a delightful horse to be around and he’s obviously special
because he’s taken us a lot of places,” Barba said. Make Music For Me, a
4-year-old Bernstein colt, finished fourth in last year’s Kentucky Derby and
tenth after a troubled start a month later in the Belmont Stakes. In March,
Make Music For Me split a field of 14 in the Godolphin Mile in Dubai.
Saturday’s win accomplished at 1 1/16 miles on the Jimmy Durante Turf
Course, was the third in 17 career starts for Make Music For Me.
“Our thoughts are going a lot of ways right now,” Barba said of a next race.
“He can go on the (main track) or turf. He’ll definitely run back at Del Mar.”
The $1 million Pacific Classic on August 28, or the 1 3/8-mile turf marathon
Del Mar Handicap on the same day are the major possibilities.
“I think he looks like he could run all day,” Barba said of the distances.
