Baffert Nominates Two to Great Lady M

Hall of Fame trainers Bob Baffert and Jerry Hollendorfer combined for six of the 13 nominations to the Grade II, $200-guaranteed Great Lady M. Stakes, which will be run Saturday, July 12.

Known most recently as the A Gleam Handicap when offered at Hollywood Park until last year, the Great Lady M., which is for older fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs, is the richest of three stakes to be run the final weekend of the Summer Thoroughbred Festival.

A pair of $100,000 six-furlong races for 2-year-olds – the Willard L. Proctor Memorial and Cinderella for fillies – are scheduled for Sunday, July 13, closing day of the season.

Baffert, who captured two of the last three runnings of the A Gleam – Irish Gypsy (2011) and Book Review (2013) – nominated Maker Or Breaker and Tres Belle, while Hollendorfer, who won the A Gleam twice with Somethinaboutlaura (2006-2007), nominated Broken Sword, Doinghardtimeagain, Scherzinger and Top Kisser.

Owned by Hollendorfer and Mark DeDomenico LLC, Scherzinger has won four of nine and earned $314,103. She was third in the Grade I Vanity at Santa Anita, finishing a dozen lengths behind runaway winner Iotapa.

Other nominees to the Great Lady M. include Clearly Confused, who has won five of seven in 2014 while moving up the class ladder and Amaranth, easy winner of last month’s Betamerica.com Oaks at Oak Tree/Pleasanton.

Topping the list of 12 noms to the Proctor are the J. Paul Reddam-owned and Doug O’Neill-trained duo of Wake Up Nick, who is undefeated in two starts after a victory in the Santa Anita Juvenile June 22 and Bad Read Sanchez, a 10-length first out winner June 20, and the Hollendorfer-trained Atta’ Boy Woody, who prevailed by 7 ¾ lengths in his initial appearance June 13.

There were 13 nominations to the Cinderella, including Heart of Paradise, who won by 2 ½ lengths for Hollendorfer in her debut June 5 and Enchanting Lady, a second out winner by 6 ¼ lengths June 22 for Baffert.
