Attfield Eyes Record Ninth Queen's Plate Win

He has a lone star, win-wise, on his lifetime record, but the consistent Tower of Texas could be the horse to deliver Hall of Fame conditioner Roger Attfield a record win in the 155th edition of the Queen's Plate.

Currently tied with Harry Giddings Jr. for the most Plate wins (eight) by a conditioner, Attfield's hope of taking over sole possession of the honour rests underneath the saddle of Tower of Texas.

Owned by Scott Dilworth and Tom Van Meter, the bay son of Street Sense has one win, three seconds and two thirds from eight starts.

"He's been consistent, but he hasn't run his best race yet," said Attfield, whose most recent Plate triumph came with Not Bourbon in 2008. "There is certainly room for improvement and he's had a good week leading up to the race."

Attfield, who trained Rare Opportunity, the dam of Tower of Texas, wouldn't mind setting the solo standard on Sunday.

"It looks like it's going to be large field and anything can happen," he offered. "But, (a ninth win) it would be fine with me."

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, seeking his first Plate win, gets the call on Tower of Texas. He's won the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on four occasions, including back-to-back scores with turf titan Wise Dan, in 2012 and 2013.
