Astrology Returns in Sunland Derby

Astrology makes his much anticipated return in Sunday's Grade 3 Sunland Derby. He drew the outside post and will face ten rivals in the 9th running of the $800,000 event including Borderland Derby hero and stablemate Fusa Code.

Astrology was favored in all five of his juvenile starts and graduated in a Saratoga extended sprint second time out. The consistent son of A.P. Indy won the Iroquois at Churchill in October and wrapped up 2010 with a close-up place finish behind Santiva in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Steve Asmussen's colt did not return to the worktab until mid-February and shows six morning moves for this. Julien Leparoux takes the call.

Borderland Derby winner Fusa Code gives Asmussen a second crack at the large graded pool. The son of Fusaichi Pegasus must be given some props for earning his diploma in a local stakes race last time and he should be forwardly placed throughout.

Nacho Saint is an interesting player for Kelly Breen and Joe Bravo. He placed in a graded event while still a maiden last year and finally earned his diploma at the Big A in January. He finished an okay 4th behind Stay Thirsty when last seen in the Gotham Stakes and uncorked a strong local bullet for this on March 21.

Breen also saddled recent Parx allowance winner Ruler On Ice. The Roman Ruler gelding projects a ground saving tactical trip under Jose Valdivia.

Sinai won his debut at Hollywood Park for Bob Baffert and finished an even 3rd in the San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita Park second time out. He was 5th in the Feb  20 San Vicente and that race has since produced San Felipe hero Premier Pegasus and Rebel winner The Factor. He adds blinkers and looms a pace factor at the very least under Martin Garcia.

Beer Meister improved dramatically to post a rallying score in the Turf Paradise Derby. He is out of Pleasant Tap so his big route effort was not a complete shock. The late running gelding needs pace help.

Twice The Appeal finished 2nd behind Beer Meister last time but was disqualified and placed 4th. He won a maiden claiming sprint and starter allowance affair at Santa Anita before that and is capable of showing tactical speed.   

The field is completed by Borderland Derby runner-up Behold de Buy, sharp late running Oaklawn shipper Supreme Ruler, R Skydiver, and It's My Party.

The nine furlong Sunland Derby goes as the 12th race on March 27 with a scheduled post time of 5:45PM MT.

Who else is going to try to topple Astrology? He's a likely underlay. This race has upset written all over it. Would not be surprised if Sinai tries to steal it.
