Richard Owens has been breeding thoroughbreds in the Valley for more than 30
years, but he can't remember the last time an Arizona-bred horse was
considered a legitimate Kentucky Derby
"I don't know if there's ever been one, to tell you the truth," said Owens, owner of the Triple AAA Ranch in Glendale.
There is one now, and it belongs to Owens. It's a 3-year-old colt named
Uh Oh Bango, a son of Top Hit, and if he performs well Saturday in the
$300,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., he could be
on his way to making a run for the roses in Louisville.
