Lentenor, the full-brother to Florida Derby and Kentucky
Derby winner Barbaro, broke his maiden on Wednesday at Gulfstream Park
by a convincing margin in his third career start.
Stalking the pace, Lentenor made his bid for the lead under
John Velazquez as they neared the stretch and the son of Dynaformer kicked-away
nicely from the field. Person of Interest rallied to be second while Bigshot
finished third.
In his prior two starts Lentenor was third at Keeneland on
Polytrack before running a game second to On Vacation at Aqueduct in November.
Lentenor is owned by the Lael Stables and is trained by Michael Matz.
Michael
Matz (Lentenor) – “We’ve always known he was a good horse. He’s a big boy a
still a bit immature, but he got a lot of experience today. He’d been working
well. We’ll see how he comes out of it and take a little time to evaluate what
might be next. It could be an ‘a other than’ or maybe even a turf stakes if we
think he’s up to it. Naturally with a horse like this there are thoughts of a
Triple Crown race, but it’s much too early to say whether he’d be far enough
long to consider something like that. Naturally, I’m very pleased with how he
ran today.”
