Augustin Stable’s Angel Terrace
and Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s Miz Ida
won divisions of the 22nd
running of the Pin Oak Valley View (G3) for 3-year-old fillies before a
crowd of 16,574 on a damp Friday afternoon at Keeneland.
In the first division, Angel Terrace prevailed by a nose after
dueling in the final 100 yards with Miss Cato (GB). It was two lengths
back to Zapper Belle in third. Angel Terrace covered the 1 1/16 miles on
a turf course labeled firm in 1:44.77.
The victory was the second in the race for Augustin, trainer Jonathan
Sheppard and jockey James Graham. Augustin and Sheppard teamed to win
the race in 2010 with Fugitive Angel and Graham won a division of the
race in 2009 on Single Solution.
A Pennsylvania homebred daughter of Ghostzapper out of the Gone West
mare Another Storm, Angel Terrace improved her record to 7-3-1-0 and
more than doubled her career earnings to $146,770 with Friday’s $75,000
check from the $125,000 purse.
Angel Terrace rewarded her backers with mutuels of $57.60, $20.60 and
$15.80. Miss Cato, ridden by Gabriel Saez, returned $5.40 and $4.60.
Zapper Belle, ridden by Corey Lanerie, paid $15 to show.
It was 2½ lengths back to Cosmic Energy in fourth. She was followed
in order by favored Colonial Flag, Medolina, Ann of the Dance, Closing
Range, Volcat, Alaura Michele, Nayarra (IRE) and Run a Risk.
In the second division, Miz Ida surged past longshot English Class in
deep stretch to win by a neck and give the Kleins and trainer Steve
Margolis their first Keeneland stakes victories. Shaun Bridgmohan rode
Miz Ida, who covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.25.
Miz Ida is a homebred daughter of Proud Citizen out of the Green
Alligator mare May Gator. Now a winner of six of nine career starts, Miz
Ida improved her earnings to $298,346 with the $75,000 winner’s share.
Sent off as the second choice in the field of 10, Miz Ida returned
$11.40, $6.40 and $4. English Class, ridden by Elvis Trujillo, returned
$19.20 and $9.20 in finishing a length in front of Leading Astray, who
paid $4 to show under Eduardo Perez.
Favored Pianist finished three-quarters of a length back in fourth
and was followed in order by Freedom Reigns (IRE), Daylight Ride,
Welcome Dance, Fine Silver, Dancing Solo and More Than Love.
