Amazombie, the champion sprinter of 2011, was scratched from
Saturday’s $200,000 Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita after rain fell
early in the day.
Trainer Bill Spawr said repeatedly in the build-up to the Grade 2
Palos Verdes that he was reluctant to start Amazombie if considerable
rain fell and the track was left as wet-fast, and firm.
With an hour to post time for Saturday’s first race, the track was
listed as wet-fast, with the possibility of further rain through the
afternoon.
Amazombie was the 9-5 favorite on the morning-line for the Palos
Verdes Stakes, run over six furlongs. The race would have been his first
start since a win in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs in
November. Canonize, a 20-1 outsider on the morning-line, was also
scratched.
