Affectionately: Twice the Lady Breaks Through

Twice the Lady, runner-up in three previous appearances at Aqueduct Racetrack, broke through and scored her first stakes victory Saturday afternoon, pulling away to a two-length triumph over Withgreatpleasure in the 38th running of the $75,000 Affectionately.

Reserved in third place behind Stephanie Jayne as she led the field of four fillies and mares through an opening quarter-mile in 24.08, Twice the Lady took over second when Withgreatpleasure made an aggressive move to take the lead on the backside, with the half going in 47.73. Rounding the far turn, jockey Cornelio Velasquez let Twice the Lady out a notch and she quickly collared the front-runner, kicking clear in the final yards after shying away from a shadow in deep stretch.

Finishing 3 ½ lengths behind the runner-up was Stephanie Jayne, with odds-on favorite R Gypsy Gold another half-length back in fourth.

Twice the Lady covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.05 over the fast inner track, where she most recently was second in an optional claiming race on December 27.

“This filly has been training great,” said Ray Handal, assistant to winning trainer Anthony Dutrow. “She stayed up here after her last race, and Tony did a great job placing her and finding the spot. She’s a tough filly to find a race for. He nominated her and it came up nice. She’d been doing so good, I was pretty confident coming into the race.”

The 7-2 second choice, Twice the Lady returned $7.20 and earned $45,000 for Michael Dubb, Stuart Grant, Gary Asiquith and Scott Akman, who claimed her for $62,500 last March. The 5-year-old daughter of Quiet American is now 6-6-3 from 20 career starts, with her only other stakes appearance a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses last July at Belmont Park.

Although her next start remains uncertain, Handal indicated Twice the Lady could remain in stakes company.

“Our filly showed her stuff today,” said Handal. “We’ll see what happens but we’ll probably look for a similar spot.”
