New York's 2014 Kentucky Derby Contenders: The Juveniles

Cairo Prince and Honor Code

Here is the first installment of New York's Kentucky Derby Contenders List. Horses will be listed in order based on the Road to the Derby Points points earned. This first list will be the only 2013 look at the Derby Contenders from the New York circuit as juveniles.

The list will come out on a monthly basis, after each of the New York Derby prep races. The rest of the New York Derby Trail will happen at Aqueduct. The Jerome (G2), which will be run on January 4th on the inner track at a mile and 70 yards, offers Kentucky Derby points of 10-4-2-1. On February 1st the Withers (G3) goes at a mile and a sixteenth also for 10-4-2-1 in points. The March prep race will be the Gotham (G3) on the first of the month also at a mile and a sixteenth. Here the points get more serious with 50-20-10-5 up for grabs. The $1,000,000 Wood Memorial (G1) offers the most points 100-40-20-10 and will be run on the main track at nine furlongs on April 5th.

As 2013 ends, Honor Code and Havana sit atop New York's Kentucky Derby Contenders List and they are also currently in the first two positions in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points list.

Here is the video of the thrilling Remsen Stakes in which Honor Code won a very close photo finish after battling head to head with Cairo Prince down the stretch as Wicked Strong closed nicely for third.

Honor Code was the second choice in the first Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool behind the All Other 3YOs that were made the 4/5 favorite. Coup de Grace at 48-1 looks like a great wager after winning his second start at Gulfstream Park. He showed a lot of guts beating a strong first level allowance field at Gulfstream Park.

I am very interested to see where Top Billing turns up for his second start. This son of Curlin is a half-brother of a veteran Lane’s End mare that once sold for $5,000,000 while in foal to Unbridled’s Song. In an unusual move trainer Shug McGaughey shipped Top Billing down to Laurel to break his maiden.

Please let me know if you have any horses that you’d like to see on the second list of New York's Kentucky Derby Contenders.

I'm glad to see a Pioneerof the Nile offspring (Cairo Prince) as a Derby contender. Even though POTN runners has been solid on turf, ya gotta think tehy'll take to the CD dirt as their daddy did in his first time on natural dirt. Great list Matt.
Capper how did W.S. gain on them.At the top of the stretch he was even with Cairo and a half length behind Honor Code. They all ran even in the stretch. The horse that might of secretly run a big race ,was Pletchers Intense Holiday. He was about 7 lengths off of that WALK-Athon up front. He made a big move on the turn, almost caught up to them at the sixteenth pole.If you look carefully,Wicked Strong came out and interfered with him. Personally the top 3 were not impressive at all.The dissapointing horse was Honor Code, based on the closing kick he showed his first 2 races. I would of thought he'd run away and hide going so slow thru the middle part of the race.
Thought Wicked Strong ran a great race in the Remsen. He may not be better than the top 2, but was shocked he gained on them in the stretch with that dawdling pace.
i also think, while almost a sprinter... wired bryan could be on this list. super stud at 7f, not sure if he can stretch out but w/e
love your list --- in order i would drop we miss artie to the bottom... 1) honor code 2) cairo prince 3) coup de grace 4) havana 5) strong mandate 6) wicked strong
Wicked Strong, rallying into walking early fractions, has me very interested.
Good to see NY represent
Honor Code, Strong Mandate and Top Billing lead a solid NY contingent for Derby glory.
