2013 Kentucky Derby Contenders: Injury List - February Update

Update on Kentucky Derby contenders that are off of the trail, or that have missed training time. (As of February 26, 2013)

Setbacks

Bradester: Missed the Holy Bull Stakes and hasn't recorded a work since January 12. It was tweeted that the colt has some minor issues.

Brown Almighty: After finishing fifth in the Smarty Jones Stakes, trainer Tim Ice reported the colt had a severe lung infection. Brown Almighty will be treated with antibiotics and may head back to the lawn in upcoming starts. Update: Still dealing with the lung infection.

Distinctiv Passion: Winner of the San Pedro Stakes bruised a foot and is recovering.

Frac Daddy: Grabbed a quarter (sustained a hoof injury) in the Holy Bull Stakes (1/26/13), and since has reported throat ulcer issues. Will likely need at least 30 days to heal.

Fury Kapcori: Missed the Robert B. Lewis Stakes due to “a little problem that might cost him a little time.” according to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Update: No recorded works or news since January 19.

Know More: Back in training with Doug O'Neil. The son of Lion Heart has yet to record a breeze.

Power Broker: He's back on the Derby trail! The Baffert trainee has recorded three works in February, including a 4F :47.80 (7/42) breeze on February 25.

Purple Egg: Illness kept the undefeated stakes winner out of the Sam F. Davis Stakes. Update: The son of Lion Heart is now healthy and he recorded a bullet 5F 1:00 flat at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 24. Trainer Jane Cibelli may send him directly to the Tampa Bay Derby.

Uncaptured: Back in training, he's recorded two breezes at Ocala Training Center, including a 4F :47.80 move over Polytrack. The Mark Casse trainee is targeting the Spiral Stakes on March 23.

Off of the trail

Alpha Mike Foxtrot: The Maryland Juvenile Champion broke down in the stretch of the Miracle Wood Stakes on February 9. Sadly, he had to be euthanized.

Violence: The undefeated, promising colt suffered right front sesamoid fracture, possibly sustained during the Fountain of Youth and is recovering at his owner's farm.

Missing In Action

Bern Identity: Stakes winner finished fifth in the Holy Bull Stakes on January 26 and missed a scheduled start in the Fountain of Youth. The Kelly Breen trainee hasn't recorded a breeze since before the Holy Bull.

Little Jerry: He was fourth in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on February 2 and hasn't recorded a work since the race. Perhaps we'll see a work from him in the next few days. I'll check on him next month.

Nice to see Power Broker & Uncaptured back on the work tab. I think if either of this horses matured over the winter they could be Triple Crown trail factors.
I miss hearing about Bern Identity... it's worrying me A LOT.
Is Purple Egg's trainer Jane Cibelli still winless at Tampa since her vet was ruled off the grounds of Tampa Bay Downs?
