2013 Kentucky Derby - Black Onyx Scratched

#1 Black Onyx has been scratched from Saturday’s 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Stewards have decided that the #1 slot in the starting gate will be left open in the Kentucky Derby starting gate and the remaining 19 horses in the Derby field will start from the post positions they drew in Wednesday’s post draw.

Black Onyx had most recently won the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park and was listed as 50-1 in the morning line.

What the Nation is saying about 2013 Kentucky Derby - Black Onyx Scratched...

After the Spiral he was my Derby pick, such a looker. There will be other races down the road for this beauty.
Media reports and statements from Breen indicate that when swelling first noticed, Vet said they could ice and see how he looked Sat. morning. But Breen ordered the xrays which revealed the chip in ankle. Results did not come in until 9:30a. I don't think you can argue with xray. Connections did fine by the horse.
That's what I sounded like when I used to jump to conclusions.
Black Onyx owner is a piece of work. He waited until it was to late for another horse to take his place. They were just pissed they got the 1 hole. Nothing wrong with him other than that. That showed true sportsmanship!
Black Onyx confirming set xrays (taken after 9:30, revealed ankle chip...
I know sorry, my stupid phone wouldn't show half the story but yes I hope he's okay. My question is does leaving #1 help the inside horse more.
Leaving the #1 post open makes all the sense in the world.
jmac, The answer to your question is contained in the above referenced article.
No one wants the 1 hole, jmac, due to the run to the turn. Check out the starting gate position for 10f at CD. I like Black Onyx and hope there is no serious problem.
So does everyone move down one? Oh and if they just leave the gate empty that'll be a bad move.
haha that would be funny..we didn't get the post we wanted...scratch lol

Was BO withdrawn from the Derby due to the post position?
