2012 BC F&M Sprint: By the Numbers

As far as the Breeders’ Cup races go, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is a fairly new race. It was first run in 2007 when the championship races were held at Monmouth Park. In 2007 and 2008, the race was simply a million dollar ungraded stakes race; it was not until 2009 that the F&M Sprint received its current Grade 1 status. Because of its short-lived status, the race has only been run at 3 different tracks: Monmouth Park, Santa Anita Park, and Churchill Downs. With that in mind, here are some more defining numbers for the race.

0—The number of times a horse, jockey, owner, or trainer has won the F&M Sprint more than once.

½--The smallest margin of victory, recorded by Maryfield in the very first running of the Filly and Mare Sprint.

1—The number of times each either a 5 or 6-year old mare has won the race (Maryfield, 6, in 2007 and Dubai Majesty, 5, in 2010).

2—The number of times Switch, who will likely run in this year's edition, has finished second in the F&M Sprint.

3—The number of times a 4-year old filly has won the race (Ventura 2008, Informed Decision 2009, and Musical Romance 2011). Consequently, no 3-year old has ever won the Sprint.

4—The largest margin of victory in lengths, recorded by Ventura in the 2008 renewal of the race.

5—The number of total Breeders' Cup Filly & Sprint winners so far ... no one has been able to win two.

6—The length in furlongs of the inaugural running of the Sprint due to the configuration of Monmouth’s track.

7—The length in furlongs at which the F&M Sprint is currently run.

1.19:90—The fastest time recorded in the Sprint at its current distance. Ventura set this mark in 2008.

1.23:47—The slowest time recorded in the F&M Sprint at its current distance. Musical Romance stopped the clock in this time in last year’s edition of the race.

What the Nation is saying about 2012 BC F&M Sprint: By the Numbers...

I would love to see another time like Ventura's, but unfortunately the times have been progressively getting slower each year. However, if Groupie Doll shows the same effort that she's been giving all year, then I think we'll be in for a real treat performance and time wise this year.
I think Groupie Doll is the best single of the entire BC weekend
We are in for a treat this year with Groupie Doll! I was at the first one at Monmouth Park and I am looking forward to more pleasant weather at Santa Anita.
Fun and interesting facts, Florida Filly. I'm very much looking forward to this race with Groupie Doll and the young Contested. It should be blazing fast.
I had forgotten how fast Ventura had run ... yowza!
