After 2 very solid runs at a mile in the G1 Lockinge Stakes & G1 Queen Anne Stakes, trainer Aidan O'Brien has opted to move Verrazano up in trip from a mile to 10f for the G1 Coral-Eclipse this Saturday at Sandown. This time though, Verrazano will be ridden by jockey Ryan Moore instead of Joseph O'Brien. Coolmore will also send out War Command trying 10f for the first time in his career in the Coral-Eclipse with jockey Seamie Heffernan penciled in for that mount.
  • Buckpasser · I think 10f might not be Verrazano's strength, but I do think Ryan Moore may well be a good choice for him. · 26 days ago
  • https://www.facebook.com/john.karczewski.39 · I am no expert on Euro racing and only watch the "big" races but I LOVE Ryan Moore. I am super happy he has the mount. Will be watching Saturday. Go Verrazano! · 26 days ago
Finally caught up and watch his two European starts, first thought was his new mid/rear of the pack closing running style. I am used to seeing this guy on or near the pace and being quirky about being inside or in between horses and now he is sitting behind horses near the rear of the pack. I know his new running style fits European racing and turf racing in general better but either this horse has really matured or Aidan has done a great job getting this horse to work out some quirks and learn some new tricks. Even though he has not won I am actually pleasantly surprised and happy for Verrazzano. The raw talent has always been there but to me it was uncertain how he would perform in a new country on a new surface and so far I am pleased. Look forward to watching more of him, been a big fan since his monster maiden win

  • Euro Trash · I feel it is more the style of training here that has made him a more tractable animal. Training in gallops perhaps has taught him to relax within a group of horses. He was very tractable in his last race and put a good run in. And, O'Brien is an elite trainer, so that certainly helps · 38 days ago
My Pick in the Queen Anne to beat Sky Lantern, Toronado third. Hoping they put him on the front or close to it, and not keep him wrapped up at the back. Their Lockinge ride reminded me of the terrible ride Joseph gave So You Think in the 2011 Arc.
  • travel_vic · really? that is asking an awfuly lot · 47 days ago
  • EP Taylor · I can't believe I am picking him either, but he never got a fair go last out, but he did travel nicely when allowed. · 46 days ago

  • paul.nathan.946 · Joseph is a horrid jockey, good run from verrazano but this was no g1 more like a g2 toronado, sky lantern all have lengths on olympic glory who was running on probable unsuitable ground · 73 days ago
  • shackleford · Verrazano ran super considering the ride and all of the firsts. He was in tight and off the pace. He hated running inside horses last year as well. Definitely showed some maturity. · 72 days ago
gotta give respect that was impressive as I did not think he would hit the board. Ascot is next and I think he will improve off that
For anyone who might not have had a chance to see the replay of Verrazano's European debut on turf in the G1 Lockinge Stakes today, there is a replay of the race that's now been uploaded onto YouTube available. I'm not sure how long it will remain on YouTube though because it wasn't uploaded by Racing UK who have the rights to the replay, and they usually do a lot of p-ssing and moaning when anyone else uploads videos onto YouTube they have the rights to.
Verrazano could potentially make his Coolmore debut for trainer Aidan O'Brien in Sunday's G3 Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown for 3+YO Males & Females over a mile on turf. Verrazano is 1 of 2 Coolmore horses still entered at this time along with Afonso De Sousa who was scratched from running in tomorrow's G3 Huxley Stakes at Chester. Other notables still entered at this time for the G3 Amethyst Stakes are Viztoria, Penitent, Sruthan, Leitir Mor, Glory Awaits, Pearl of Africa, and Brendan Brackan.

Had a work at The Curragh in Ireland. Is pointed to the Royal Ascot. A possible start in the Queen Anne according to @DRFAnderson per Aiden O'Brien

Looking good at Coolmore team gallop at The Curragh. Out with Venus de Milo, Australia, Chiquita, Wonderfully, Tapestry, Leading Light, Geoffrey Chaucer, War Command...

Any word? Works? Excited they are trying turf with him.

  • ILuvTurfRacing · @Ruffianlover, the last I had heard was that Verrazano has some abitious entries in Europe this season, though having entries doesn't always mean they'll run in the respective race. I recently read he holds entires in both the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at 10f in Ireland in May and the G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at 10f at Ascot in June. Whether or not we actually see Verrazano in either of those races still remains to be seen, though. · 144 days ago
  • tmallios1 · Don't expect him til June. · 144 days ago
They just announced at Gulfstream feed that he is in training in Ireland with Aidan O'brien. He will be pointed to the Ascot meet. They are going tothe Turf

  • Northport · Breeding interest determines the racing future of every colt that shows promise on the track. You keep saying "bringing back", but I am still not where you think the horse is being brought back for, from what I have read, he never left Pletcher · 172 days ago
  • Northport · brought back from** · 172 days ago
Has he been officially retired yet??
Still no official announcement on whether or not the connections have changed their minds regarding the future of Verrazano. I guess didn't quite end the year on the high note they were hoping for, it would be terrific if he stayed in training!
I can't help but wonder how much his potential stud fee went down after this. And whether WTC's win yesterday pushed it down even farther.

  • Northport · Very intriguing mentioning sending him to O'Brien. While Ballydoyle is a pretty large operation it would be interesting seeing O'Brien's take on him, maybe seeing how he performs going a straight mile. But then again Coolmore already is standing 26 flat stallions in Ireland alone, and I guess they feel they don't need to try Verrazano on turf when he can still get 150+ mares in America with his current record. I have always been interested in Coolmore, but it does confuse me how they often keep their best colts in training as older horses in Ireland, while the 3 y/o colts they own all of (or shares of) are retired at the end of their sophomore season · 240 days ago
  • Northport · in America, that is · 240 days ago

on November 23, Verrazano worked 4F at Belmont Park on Fast Dirt training in :48,86 b finishing 26/122.
I thought he was retiring after the Breeders Cup?

  • tmallios1 · I would love to see Flat out run in this race. From way out there he had no shot realistically in the BC Classic. He has shown that a Mile is right up his alley in beating Cross Traffic. His big effort was at Belmont on July 6th.Although he ran 2nd and 3rd in the ensuing races, his speed figure dropped. With Verrazano and Goldencents in the race, with hopefully some of the sprinters being mentioned. It should set it up nicely for the Old Boy. · 253 days ago
STOP RETIREING HORSES SO DAMN EARLY OWNERS. RUINS THE ENTIRE GAME FOR THE FANS ESPICALLY WHEN THEY GOT AT ELAST 1 MORE GOOD YEAR OF RACING IN THEM IF NOT 2. SICKENS ME
  • Show All 20 Comments
  • travel_vic · as long as the breeders keep running the game and that remains the major way to earn money with they get, nothing is going to change. · 272 days ago
  • kay.robinett · tcglory, there is a big reason that many of our HOY lately have been geldings and mares. In fact this year once again the leading candidates are geldings (Game On Dude and Wise Dan) with a bit of mention towards the filly Princess of Sylmar. The game these days is racing to breed rather than breeding to race. Perhaps the great success of the Ramseys with their stallion Kitten's Joy and his many homebred stakes winning babies might inspire others to go "old school". We can only hope... · 272 days ago
http://www.coolmore.com/verrazano-to-ashford-after-santa-anita/ This just really infuriates me. Why rush him off to stud? There are plenty of colts that do that who get injured and cannot continue racing. This is so silly- especially when he is such a promising colt, and could really make some noise next year. SO disappointed it is not even funny.

  • rafirox · Not very surprising. · 273 days ago
  • Northport · What has always confused me is that the first string Irish based Coolmore runners (colts, not fillies - the fillies usually are retired early if they are nice) are almost always kept in training as older horses if they are not injured, yet in North America they rarely have any of their stallion prospects racing at 4 and above. Perhaps, as people mentioned, it is the purse structure in North America, or maybe it is the fact that Coolmore almost always buy into their stallions during their racing career in conjunction with other partnerships (who rather retire early than continue to race)? An honest question, if anyone has any theories · 273 days ago
Didn't race at two, and he won't run at four ... How will we ever know how good Verrazano could have been?
